Dr. Joep van Gennip is an associate member within the project ‘Extreme Beliefs – The Epistemology and Ethics of Fundamentalism’. His postdoctoral research focuses on the reintegration policy and activities of Dutch churches for political war collaborators after the Second World War. Part of the project is what we as society can learn nowadays from these activities in relation to ex-jihadists who return in our society.
Joep read history at the Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Oxford. After his graduating he gained a scholarship to study theology for one year, also in Nijmegen. In 2014 he obtained his PhD from the Radboud University. He specialized in the history of the Roman Catholic Church from the 17th century till recent times. He has published on a wide variety of topics, including the Jesuits, spirituality, Roman-Catholic institutions, historiography, and political war collaborators. In 2018 he published with Karim Schelkens and Paul van Geest Het katholicisme in Europa. Een geschiedenis (‘Catholicism in Europe. A History’) which will be published in English. He is a contributor to the 4th edition (forthcoming 2021) of The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, edited by Andrew Louth. Currently he is a postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University.
