Sophia Moskalenko promoveerde in 2004 in de psychologie aan de Universiteit van Pennsylvania. Haar onderzoek naar terrorisme en radicalisering presenteert zij regelmatig op wetenschappelijke conferenties, bij overheidsbriefings, radio-uitzendingen en internationale televisie-nieuwsuitzendingen. Als onderzoeker bij het National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (NC-START) heeft ze gewerkt aan onderzoeksprojecten in opdracht van het Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security en Department of State. Samen met Clark McCauley is zij co-auteur van de bekroonde Friction: How Conflict Radicalizes Them and Us (Oxford University Press 2011), The Marvel of Martyrdom: The Power of Self-Sacrifice in the Selfish World (Oxford University Press 2019) en Radicalization to Terrorism: What Everyone needs to know (Oxford University Press 2020).
